About Palar/Porandalar Dam

The Palar Porundalar Dam is constructed across Palar riv erand Porundalar river near Balasamudram village of Palani Taluk in Dindigul District. These rivers originate in the Western Ghats adjoining Kodaikanal hills. The surplus water from Palar and Porundalar dam goes as Shanmuganadhi and it confluences with Amaravathi River at Alangium village. The length of the river is 40 km.

By this reservoir Dindigul District is benefitted. Palani taluk is benefitted by this reservoir.

The construction of dam was started in the year 1971 and completed in the year 1978. The reservoir was first opened for irrigation by the then Hon’ble Minister for Public Works and Agriculture Thiru.P.Kulandaivelu on 24.12.1978.
