Introduction:

The Chennai region oversees the management of a vast water network that spans 13 Districts including the maintenance of 28 Reservoirs, 3998 Lakes, Rivers, and extensive Canal systems. These water bodies are distributed across 7 major River Basins and 51 sub-basins, ensuring the proper flow and storage of water resources. Among the most prominent Rivers are the Palar, Pennaiyar, Kosasthalaiyar, Vellar, Araniyar, and the Historic Cooum River along with Buckingham Canal. These Rivers play a crucial role in the Region’s water management, flood control, and agricultural irrigation systems.

Organisational Structure:

The Region is organized into 4 circle, 11 divisions, 43 sub-divisions, and 159 sections, under this Region to operate, maintain and monitor the Irrigation systems besides Planning, Development, Conservation and Management of Territorial Water Resources.

Water Resources Infrastructure:

The Irrigation Network consists of 28 Reservoirs, 1048 System Tanks with 115636.14 Ha of Ayacut and 2950 Non System tanks with 290353.86 Ha of Ayacut to cater to the irrigation requirements of the Agricultural command area under 7 basins and 51 Sub Basins.
