Gap area covered (in Ha) due to the intervention of the project

The present gap area is arrived as 6645 Ha (174501 – 167856). Due to change in land use pattern, viz. urbanization and industrialization of agricultural lands, an extent of about 5500 Ha out of 6645 Ha of present gap area in the net irrigated ayacut  is to be deleted from the registered  ayacut.  Hence the present gap area after intervention of the project has been  brought down as 1145 Ha

 Name of Work

REHABILITATION  OF LEFTOUT REACHES IN BRANCH CANALS AND DISTRIBUTORIES OFF TAKING IN RIGHT SIDE IN BETWEEN L.S 33.790 KM TO 48.870 KM OF PARAMBIKULAM MAIN CANAL

3

 Success Story

The Rehabilitation Works  had been commenced on 3.6.2009. The work contemplates C.C lining for 38.067Km length of Distributories and 78.154Km length of Water courses. The work was completed on 21 st October 2010. The Periyapatti Distributory has an ayacut of 1696Ac which is the longest Distributory covered in this Package. Before lining, the duration taken for water to travel from off-take point to Tail end was 24 Hrs and now it takes only about 4 Hrs to reach the Tail end, thereby savings of 20 Hrs in transmission, besides the  seepage of water is very much reduced and considerable savings of water is ensured. Similarly, the other Distriburories are also benifitted. Because of this, water is supplied up to the tail end and the full ayacut is cultivated.

 Name of Work

REHABILATION OF LEFT REACHES IN DISTRIBUTORS OF UDUMALPET MAIN CANAL BETWEEN REACH FROM L.S 17.400KM TO 38.200 KM.

3

 Success Story

The distributaries are located in the dry belt of Udumalpet Taluk. Almost all the distributaries are surrounded by bushes and there is no track along the canal to transport the construction materials. The bidder themselves cleared the bushes and formed the track along the canal to carry the materials inside through vehicles. Some of the farmers did not allow the vehicles carrying the construction materials inside their lands. Such sort of problems and bottlenecks were solved by the WUA’s and the works executed. Under this package, fresh lining for unlined portion of canal has been carried out to a length of 78500 M in 22 distributaries. Also the bed slope of the canals which were flatter in some reaches has been standardized so as to enable the water to flow with the designed velocity.

Due to this, water released in the head sluice has reached the tail ends quickly. The tail end ayacut which was not getting water previously now gets water to the entire area within the time limit. This pattern of work minimize the seepage losses and thereby savings of water to irrigate more area in the tail end.

Similarly, in Bolarapatty distributary & DI sluice @ M 11.7.620 of Udumalpet canal, works were completed during the middle of August and water is allowed for irrigation. Thiru K.Sellamuthu, President of WUA expressed his comment on the performance of the IAMWARM works as “Excellent”. He added that the time taken to convey water to the tail end before was 6 hours but now drastically reduced to one and half hours, because of the lining of canals. Also he said that loss of water is negligible.

The world bank team member Er.R.K.Malhothra visited the lining work @ 18th branch of Chinnaveerampatti distributary of Udumalpet  main canal in this package and he was fully satisfied and also appreciated the works and mentioned those as the role model work of lining of canal for India.

REHABILITATION  OF  LEFT OUT REACHES IN BRANCH CANALS AND DISTRIBUTARIES OFF TAKING IN THE LEFT SIDE OF THE  PARAMBIKULAM MAIN CANAL IN BETWEEN   L.S. 34.19 KM TO 42.23KM

3

 Success Story

After the completion of preliminary works, fresh lining for unlined portion of canal was carried out for 123.55 KM length. Also the slope / gradient of the canals which were flatter in some reaches were made steeper, so as to enable the water to flow with higher velocity.

Due to this, water released in the head reaches has reached the tail ends quickly. The tail end ayacut which was not getting water previously now gets water and a gap of about 10% is bridged by the rehabilitation works. The line losses like seepage has been minimized because of Cement Concrete lining. This provides increased conveyance efficiency.
