The Amaravathy reservoir was constructed across the Amaravathy river, which originates from the Munnar Hills in Kerala and confluence with Cauvery river at Thirumakudalur near Karur. Total length of Amaravathy river is 227kms.
By this reservoir Karur and Tiruppur Districts are benefitted. Udumalapet, Madathukulam, Dharapuram, Krishnarayapuram, Aravakurichi and Karur taluks are benefitted by this reservoir.
The foundation stone for the construction of Amaravathy reservoir was laid by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru.C.Rajagopalachari on 10.12.1953. The Amaravathy reservoir was thrown open for irrigation on 31.12.1957 by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru.K.Kamaraj.
