The Poigaiyar Reservoir was constructed across Poigaiyar river near Aralvoimozhi Village in Thovalai Taluk of Kanyakumari District. The river Poigaiyar is a tributary to Pazhayar in Kanyakumari District. The river Poigaiyar originates in the eastern slopes of western ghats of Poigai Malai reserve forest area.
By this reservoir Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari Districts are benefitted. Kanyakumari, Radhapuram, Thovala and Aralvoimozhi taluks are benefitted by this reservoir.
The construction of the dam was commenced during 1989 and completed by 2002. The first water release was during 2003.
