The Vaigai Reservoir has been constructed across Vaigai River. The Vaigai River originates in the Western ghats in Varusanadu Hills and flows in Northern direction. The Vaigai River runs about 70kms and confluence with Suruliyar River. Total length of Vaigai river is 258km. Vaigai Hydroelectric Power Plant was designed for a capacity of 6 MW.
By this reservoir Ramanathapuram, Madurai and Sivagangai Districts are benefitted. Madurai South, Thirupuvanam, Manamadurai, Parthibanur, Paramakudi and Ramanathapuram taluks are benefitted by this reservoir.
The construction of dam was started on September 1954 and completed by 1958. Vaigai Dam was inaugurated on 21 January 1959 by then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru.K.Kamaraj.
