Willingdon Dam was constructed across Periya Odai near Keelacheruvai Village in Thittagudi Taluk, Cuddalore District. The reservoir receives water from the Vellar River through a feeder channel originating at the Tholudur Regulator, along with water from its own catchment area.
The total command area of the dam covers 24,059 acres in Thittagudi Taluk, Cuddalore District. A new bund was aligned downstream of the existing bund between L.S. 1700 m to 2500 m, and the execution work was completed in September 2010. After the completion, the reservoir stored water up to a height of 24 feet (1445 mcft out of a total 29.72 feet, 2580 mcft) during the 2010-11 period. In the following irrigation period (2011-12), water was stored up to 27 feet (1890 mcft out of 29.72 feet, 2580 mcft).
This reservoir benefits South Arcot District, with Vridhachalam Taluk specifically benefitting from its water supply. The construction of the dam began in 1913 and was completed in 1923.
