The Chembarambakkam dam is one of the Largest Irrigation Tank in Tamil Nadu situated in southwest side of the Chennai City. Chembarambakkam tank is fed by the Chowdrikkal Surplus Channel conveying the surplus water from the Sriperumbudur Tank, the terminal tank of Palar Anicut System. There is another source namely Cooum River diverted from the Korattur Anicut through New Bangaru Supply Channel. The surplus water from this mammoth sized tanks falls into Adayar River through the Chembarambakkam surplus course, which flow through the south Chennai and falls in Bay of Bengal through Adayar backwaters.
Intake Tower was also constructed through the Krishna Water Supply Project to supply the Drinking water to Chennai City.This supply is to South Chennai and part of Central Chennai ie. Porur, Ramapuram, K.K.Nagar, Alandur, Pallipattu (IIT), Velacheri, Mylapore & Nandanam, Mogappair West. It has seven inlets at various levels and one outlet through which water pumped to Metro Waterpumpingstation.
The Chembarambakkam dam was constructed in the Pallava period around 1400 years. In the late eighties Chembarambakkam tank bund was raised to accommodate the Krishna Water conveyed by the Link canal from Poondi Reservoir.
