Chittar-I Reservoir was constructed across Chittar-I in Kaliyal Village, Vilavancode Taluk of Kanyakumari District. It is originated in the mountains in Kalamalai Reserve forest of Western Ghats near Yettukani and Vandipilavukani and it confluences with Kodayar 4.8km below Pechiparai. The total length of Chittar-I is 11.2kms.
By this reservoir Kaniyakumari and Tirunelveli Districts are benefitted. Vilavankode and Nanguneri taluks are benefitted by this reservoir.
The foundation stone of the reservoir was laid by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru. K.Kamaraj during 1963 and construction was completed during 1970. The first water release was made by the then Hon’ble Minister for Public Works Thiru.Ramaiah in the year 1973.
