The Kodaganar Dam was constructed across Kodaganar river which originates from Kallar Reserved Forest in the western side of Sirumalai Hills and confluences with Amaravathi river near Karur which is a major tributary of Cauvery River. Total length of Kodaganar River is 109km.

By this reservoir Karur and Dindigul Districts are benefitted. Vedasandur and Aravakurichi taluks are benefitted by this reservoir.

The Foundation stone for the construction of Kodaganar reservoir was laid by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru.M.Karunanidhi on 25.08.1973. The construction was completed in the year 1994. The Kodaganar reservoir was first opened for irrigation by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Selvi. J.Jayalalithaa on 23.09.1994.
