The Krishnagiri Dam is constructed across Penniyar River near Periamuthur village in Krishnagiri Taluk of Krishnagiri District. The Pennaiyar river originates on the south eastern slopes of Chennakesava Hills, North west of Nandidurg in Karnataka State. The total length of Pennaiyar river is 432 kms of which 112 kms lies in Karnataka State and 320 kms in Tamil Nadu.

Total command area of the dam is 3647 ha (9012 acres) lying in Krishnagiri Taluk of Krishnagiri District.

The Spillway consists of 8 vents of size 12.20m x 6.10m (40’x20’), the maximum discharging capacity of the spillway is 4234 cumecs (1,49,500cusecs) The flood discharge will be disposed through the spillway and River sluices.

This dam benefits Dharmapuri District. Krishnagiri Taluk is benefited by this reservoir.

The construction of dam was started by 1955 and completed on January 1958.
