Kuppanatham dam was constructed across Cheyyar river near Kuppnatham Village in Cheyyar Taluk of Vellore District. The River Cheyyar takes its origin in the eastern slopes of Jawadhu Hills and Western slopes of Thenmalai Hills. The river is a tributary of Palar and its infall into Palar River. The length of the Cheyyar river from its origin to its infall palar river is 188 kms.
The length of the river from its origin to its infall palar river is 150 kms in Vellore and Tiruvannamalai Districts and 38 kms in Kancheepuram District totaling a length of 188 kms and then flows through Kancheepuram District and empties into Bay of Bengal at Sadurangapattinam
This dam benefits Thiruvannamalai District. Polur and Chengam Taluks are benefited by this dam.
The dam works were commenced on 15.05.2005 and completed on 31.12.2008. The dam was inaugurated by the then Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru.M.K.Stallin on 10.02.2010. The first release of water was on 10.02.2010.
