The Parambikulam river has its origin in Ramlakshman Malai with name Periyar in that area in Anamalai hills of Coimbatore District. Parambikulam River is the tributary of Chalakudi river. This river after joining Chalakudi river traverses a tortuous course in Kerala state limits and finally empties into Arabian Sea. It also generates 30 M.W. of power at Sarkarpathy power house.

By this reservoir Coimbatore and Tiruppur Districts are benefitted. Sulur, Tiruppur, Dharapuram, Kinathukadavu, pollachi Udumalpet and Palladam taluks are benefitted by this reservoir.

The construction of Parambikulam reservoir was commemorated by the then Hon’ble Prime Minister Pundit Sri.M.Jawaharlal Nehru on 07.10.1961. The Parambikulam reservoir was inaugurated by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru. K.Kamaraj on 12.01.1967.
