The Sathanur dam is constructed across Penniyar River near Periamuthur village in Krishnagiri Taluk of Krishnagiri District. The Pennaiyar river originates on the south eastern slopes of Chennakesava Hills, North west of Nandidurg in Karnataka State. The total length of Pennaiyar river is 432 kms of which 112 kms lies in Karnataka State and 320kms in Tamil Nadu.
During the constructions of II stage, the capacity of the dam was increased from 4600 Mcft. to 8100 Mcft.
Total command area of the dam is 18,207 ha (44,972 acres) lying in Chengam, Kallakurichy, Tiruvannamalai & Tirukoilur Taluk of Thiruvannamalai District.
This dam benefits Tiruvannamalai and South Arcot District. Chengam, Kaalkurichi, Tiruvannamalai and Thirukoilur taluks are benefited by this dam.
The construction was commenced by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru. K. Kamaraj on 02.10.1954. It was inaugurated and was in operation by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru. K. Kamaraj on 10.11.1957.
