The Veeranam Tank is located in the Kattumannarkoil and Chidambaram Taluks of Cuddalore District. The main source of water supply to the tank is the Vadavar Channel, which originates from the Lower Anicut across the Coleroon River, running for a length of 22 kilometers before reaching the Veeranam Tank. The tank is used for both irrigation and the water supply needs of Chennai City.

To enhance its capacity, the tank’s bund was raised, and an additional foreshore bund was constructed. The full tank level was increased from 45.50 feet to 47.50 feet, thereby expanding its storage capacity from 930 Mcft to 1,465 Mcft under the New Veeranam Project, specifically aimed at addressing the drinking water needs of Chennai Metro. Simultaneously, the earthen bund length in the foreshore area was extended from 8 kilometers to 30.65 kilometers.

The reservoir primarily benefits the Cuddalore District, including the Kattumannarkoil and Chidambaram Taluks. The Veeranam Tank was originally formulated by King Paranthaga Chozhan I in the 9th century.
