The office of the Chief Engineer, WRO, PWD, Trichy Region was formed on 05.10.1995, with its Head Quarters at Trichy. The hydraulic boundaries of Trichy Region includes the Cauvery Basin, Vellar Basin, Agniyar Basin and Pambar-Kottakaraiyar Basin (Part) which spreads over in 12 districts (i.e) Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Karur, Trichy, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Pudukkottai.
There are 4 Circles and 22 Divisions, 68 Sub-divisions and 315 sections under this Region to operate, maintain and monitor the Irrigation systems besides Planning, Development, Conservation and Management of Territorial Water Resources.
The Irrigation Network consists of 6 Dams, 925 System Tanks and 1432 Non System tanks (Total 2357 Tanks) to cater to the irrigation requirements of the Agricultural command area under the respective basins.

The Ayacut of 6 Reservoirs is 701163 Ha. The system Ayacut is 59851 Ha and the remaining 91670 Ha comes under Non-System Ayacut (Total 151521 Ha) for Tanks.
